Types of hearing aids

Our hearing aids come in different styles and sizes. The decision on which type to fit a customer greatly depends on their hearing loss profiles, shape of ears and the different needs of the customer.

Picking the wrong type may affect the performance of the hearing aid as well as the customer’s comfort. It is best to discuss with our audiologists before making a decision.

Why Choose Oticon Hearing Aids?

The next big thing in hearing aid technology – BrainHearing™

Brainhearing technology

For your brain to work in a natural way, it needs information about the full sound scene. But with hearing loss, the sound information is limited. This makes it harder for the brain to focus on what’s important in the surroundings.  Our hearing aids are equipped with our proprietary BrainHearing™ technology that is designed to support, stimulate and reduce the strain on your brain. With our technology, Oticon hearing aids will

  • Introduce you to a more natural soundscape
  • Reduce listening effort
  • Improve your memory and speech understanding
  • Improve your ability to follow conversations

Caring for your hearing is equivalent to caring for your brain. The sooner you act, the better for your brain.

How it works• Bypasses the damaged part of the inner ear
• Transforms sounds into electrical signals that are sent directly to the auditory nerve and on to the brain, where they are heard as sounds
• Amplifies sounds that would otherwise not be audible to an individual
• Amplified sounds travel through the outer and middle ear to reach the cochlea and auditory nerve

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my hearing is bad?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may be a sign of potential hearing loss:

  • Sounds appear muffled
  • Difficulty having conversations over the phone
  • Ringing or humming in the ear
  • Often increasing the volume of electronic devices
  • Hypersensitivity to certain sounds
  • Frequently asking people to speak louder or repeat themselves

It’s best to schedule a consultation and hearing test with a hearing care clinic if you suspect a hearing condition.

How can I test my own hearing?

You can do this with a free online hearing test, plenty of which are available online. Find a quiet area and conduct the test with headphones for a more accurate result.

If you want a more comprehensive diagnosis, Hearing Partners provides both screening and diagnostic tests to suit your needs. We also provide specialised tests for babies and children in Singapore to assess and treat the hearing of little ones.

How can I cure ringing in the ears?

If you find yourself constantly hearing ringing sounds in your ears, you could be experiencing tinnitus. You can schedule a consultation with Hearing Partners to evaluate your condition and our audiologists will work together with you to find a suitable cure for ear ringing.

A treatment plan will be customised based on your condition and needs.

How long is a hearing test?

A simple hearing test should take around 30 minutes and is completely painless. An audiologist will determine what hearing tests you require after a consultation.

How much is a hearing test?

Hearing Partner provides a complimentary hearing test to evaluate your hearing levels. Depending on the results, other tests might be necessary and they may incur additional costs.

What are Rinne and Weber tests used for?

Rinne and Weber assessments are tests that help to distinguish your type of hearing loss (conductive or sensorineural).

A Rinne test compares air conduction with bone conduction, and is used to check for hearing loss in one ear. On the other hand, a Weber test checks if a sound is produced equally in both ears.

These hearing loss tests are usually combined to determine the location and nature of your condition.

What should you not do before a hearing test?

You should avoid loud* places at least 24 hours before your appointment as this can result in temporary hearing loss and may affect the overall results. Examples of such places include construction sites and concerts.

*A place is considered loud if you need to communicate by raising your voice or shouting at a distance of 1m or 3ft.

When do I need hearing aids?

Your audiologist may suggest hearing aids if you are diagnosed with moderate hearing loss. This means that you have difficulty hearing sounds that are lower than 41 – 55 decibels.

An example of this is a conversation, where you may often ask people to speak up or repeat themselves.

Why are hearing aids so expensive?

A large percentage of the cost is due to the amount of research and development needed to continually improve the technology that powers your hearing aid. These days, advanced technology uses digital software to enable the filtering of unwanted background noise and enhance speech and environmental sounds.

Moreover, hearing aids are often customised to ensure they correct your specific hearing issues and meet your comfort preferences and lifestyle requirements.

What are the differences between cheap hearing aids sold online and those prescribed by hearing care professionals?

Hearing aids are registered as a medical device by Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA). Many “hearing aids” sold online are not actual hearing aids but Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAP) which are not registered as a medical device.  They often provide sub-standard general amplification and often do not work very well as compared to professionally prescribed and fitted hearing aids.

These devices may further damage the hearing system if it is overly amplified without proper adjustment and assessment.  Additionally, a hearing care professional is not physically available to offer any assistance for prescription and fitting, so there is no way it can be adjusted according to the user’s hearing level. If you go to a clinic, there will be

  • a proper consultation with a hearing test conducted by a hearing care professional,
  • a post-fitting review and hearing aid tuning by the hearing care professional,
  • on-the-spot hearing aid troubleshooting service, and
  • further counselling on communication strategies while wearing hearing aids.
Can I use MediSave to purchase hearing aids?

No, it is currently not available in hospitals and in private hearing care settings. That is why Oticon is offering a discount of up to $1,500 for a new pair of hearing aids if you trade in your old ones.
