Audiometric Test in Malaysia
An audiometric test is a painless and non-invasive procedure that evaluates your hearing abilities. At Hearing Partners Malaysia, this test is conducted in-house by our trained hearing care professionals, where we will accurately assess your hearing health.
What is an Audiometric Test?
An audiometric test, also known as a hearing test or an audiometric examination, assesses how well your hearing functions and identifies any hearing impairments. The test helps determine the type and degree of hearing loss, allowing our hearing care professionals to recommend appropriate treatment or interventions.
What Are the Different Types of Audiometric Tests in Malaysia?
Hearing Partners offers a variety of audiometric and hearing tests to evaluate your hearing accurately. Here are the main tests we conduct:
Pure Tone Audiometry Test
Suitable for both adults and children, pure tone audiometry (PTA) measures the softest sounds you can hear at various frequencies. The test is done in a soundproof room with headphones connected to an audiometer. A range of frequencies will be played, and you will be asked to give a signal upon hearing a tone.
The test helps identify the type and configuration of hearing loss, which refers to which frequencies are best heard.
Play Audiometry
Play audiometry is designed to assess the hearing abilities of children aged 2 to 5 years. The test is presented as a game, allowing our audiologist to observe how well your child responds to various sound levels.
The audiologist will introduce toys like balls and pegs, instructing the child to place them in a basket when a sound is heard. The test continues once the child understands the task, with different sound frequencies tested to evaluate hearing in both ears.
Speech Discrimination Test
Speech discrimination assesses how distortion impacts your ability to comprehend sounds. The test results are often evaluated together with the results of a pure tone audiometry test to gauge your speech comprehension ability.
During speech discrimination testing, two-syllable words are presented at varying loudness levels until they become inaudible.
Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)
Visual reinforcement audiometry is used to assess the hearing threshold in children aged 6 months to 3 years. This test helps determine how well young infants can hear different sound frequencies.
The child sits on a parent’s lap in a soundproof room, with speakers placed on either side. Our audiologist will encourage the child to turn their head toward the sound, rewarding them with visual reinforcement when they respond. Various sound intensities are tested to evaluate hearing levels.
Tympanometry
Tympanometry evaluates middle ear function by measuring the eardrum’s response to changes in air pressure. Our audiologist will conduct the test and provide a tympanogram, a graph that displays the results. This test is appropriate for both adults and children.
Before starting, the audiologist will examine the ear canal with an otoscope to ensure it is clear. During the test, a probe emits a tone and applies air pressure, recording how the middle ear absorbs or reflects sound.
What to Expect During an Audiometric Test Procedure
At Hearing Partners Malaysia, our audiometric test involves four simple steps, beginning with a consultation with our hearing care professionals. Learn about what to expect below.

Step 1: Consultation
The hearing care professional will discuss your hearing concerns, medical history, and lifestyle with you to better understand your needs.

Step 2: Physical ear examination
Subsequently, the hearing care professional will physically examine your ears to identify any issues, such as infections or inflammation affecting your hearing.

Step 3: Audiometric test
The actual test takes place in a soundproof room. The procedure lasts around 30 minutes, during which you will be asked to listen to different sounds through headphones.

Step 4: Review results
Once the test is complete, our hearing care professionals will review your results. Based on your condition and lifestyle, they will recommend appropriate treatments or hearing aids.

FAQs About Audiometric Tests in Malaysia
Who should take an audiometric test?
An audiometric test is important for individuals of all ages to monitor their hearing health and detect any early signs of hearing loss.
- 18 years old and above (without noticeable hearing issues): Take an audiometric test at least once every 10 years. This routine check-up helps identify subtle hearing changes that may occur gradually over time.
- 50 years old and above: Take an audiometric test annually. Age-related hearing loss becomes more common as people age, and regular testing can help detect any early signs that might need attention.
If you suspect you have hearing loss or experience symptoms like difficulty hearing conversations, muffled sounds, or tinnitus, it is important to consult a hearing care professional immediately. Early intervention can often help prevent further hearing deterioration.
What is the difference between an audiometric test and a pure tone audiometry test?
An audiometric test is a broad term that refers to a complete hearing assessment, while a pure tone audiometry test is a specific type of hearing test that measures your hearing sensitivity to different tones.
Audiometric tests may include several different tests to evaluate how well you hear and how your ears are functioning. Depending on your needs, they may involve tests such as pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and tympanometry.
What is the price of an audiometric test in Malaysia?
An audiometric test at Hearing Partners costs anywhere from RM40 to RM100. Book an appointment today.
How long does an audiometric test take?
A standard audiometric test typically takes about 30 minutes to complete. The exact duration can vary slightly depending on the type of testing involved and whether additional assessments such as speech audiometry, tympanometry, or specialised diagnostic tests are included.
Are there any risks associated with audiometric tests?
No, there are no risks associated with audiometric tests. They are painless, non-invasive procedures that are safe for both adults and children.
Are there any limitations associated with audiometric tests?
Yes, audiometric tests do have some limitations. These tests mainly assess how well you hear sounds at different pitches and volumes. They do not fully measure how your brain processes sound or how well you understand speech in complex, real-world listening environments.
Additionally, they may not detect issues related to auditory processing disorders, hidden hearing loss, or neurological conditions. Additional specialised tests may be required in such cases.
Due to these limitations, audiometric tests are often combined with other assessments and clinical evaluations to provide a more complete understanding of your hearing health.
How do I interpret the results of my audiometric test?
Your test results will be displayed on a chart called an audiogram. The chart will show how well you hear sounds at different pitches and volumes.
Your hearing care professional will review your results with you after the test and explain whether treatment or monitoring is necessary. If you would like to find out more, you can read about how to interpret your audiogram.
